Obituary

CAPT. HERBERT JAMES SCHUMACHER The family of Capt. Herbert James Schumacher, USMC would like to announce the passing of their Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, God Father on to their Heavenly Family on January 4, 2019. Herb, as he liked to be called, was a "lifer" in the Marine Corps spending one tour in Korea and three tours in Viet Nam. He was a highly decorated solider. He proudly and voluntarily served his country and took incredible pride in being one of the Greatest Generation. Even after retirement he continued to live his life as though he was still serving his country and marching to the beat. His love for the North State began many years ago with Herb, his friends and military buddies taking their version of "R&R" on Tomhead Mountain where they would gather to hunt, lift a glass, work on the cabins, ride horses, play cards and otherwise celebrate life with each other. They are fondly referred to as the Band of Brothers. Upon retirement, Herb purchased a home here in Red Bluff and moved his family here to raise. In Herbs' colorful and well lived life and travels he married Jerry Lou Lane Schumacher. They had six children together, Eugene Ray Schumacher, Gary Russel Schumacher, Penne Dale Schumacher Arbanasin, Bambi Lee Schumacher, Nannette Jo Schumacher and Britt Lane Schumacher. There are Grand Children, Colin Reed Swarthout. Nischa Swarthout Gall, Patrick Heath Dodero and Andrea "Andi" Lorene Schumacher. There are Great Grand Children, Owen Swarthout, Adam Swarthout, Devin Gall and Lilli Gall and God Son Mark "Wuubs" Dancel. Honorable mention to Steve Arbanasin, Sophia Micke Swarthout, Jennifer O'Sullivan Schumacher and Artie Gall, they married into the family and admittedly are better for it. Herb leaves behind family in Nebraska, many friends considered to be family in Red Bluff and beyond as well as his dog Gunny. Herb coached Red Bluff Little League Baseball and Buccaneer Football and was a fixture on the field and in the community. He loved the kids and was his own kind of Drill Sargent for them. Many an after-game evening was spent enjoying a cold beer and going over the team's successes and failures at Shakey's Pizza and the world-famous E's Locker Room. Herb could be found in his younger day running the backroads of Red Bluff. He worked out daily at the Racquet Ball Club and Wellness Center up until his passing and he was incredibly proud of that. Herb lived his life just as he wanted. He lived hard, worked hard and loved hard. He set time aside to enjoy the things that he worked so hard for. He gave hard lessons, did the right thing and was incredibly generous. He enjoyed taking the backroads, listening to good old country music, enjoyed a cold beer and his eclectic collection of friends and family. We will live the rest of our lives enjoying his memory and honoring him by continuing to live by his code. Full Honor Services will be held on February 1, 2019 at 12:30pm at Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, CA. Life and Times Celebration will be held on February 2, 2019 at 2pm at the Red Bluff Veterans Hall. A main course will be catered, please bring a side dish of your choice. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Red Bluff Little League, PO Box 284, Red Bluff, CA 96080. Herbert James Schumacher, safe passage Sir. We salute you.
