Ray Austin
Provence
Jan 6, 1930 — Nov 22, 2018
Ray Austin Provence passed away unexpectedly in Redding, Ca. on November 22, 2018. Ray was 88 years old when he passed away. Ray was a fourth- generation resident of the North State. He was born in Elk Creek to parents Austin and Vernice Provence and attended elementary school there. His family then moved to Corning where Ray attended Corning Union High School.
After graduation Ray enlisted in the Army, where he received an honorable discharge. Once home from the army, Ray was accepted into UC Davis where he studied Veterinarian Medicine. After several semesters Ray quit school and pursued his true love - rodeo. He was a bronc rider and traveled around with his cowboy buddies following the rodeo circuit and even rode at the Cow Palace in Oakland.
Ray settled down and married Dorothy Ann Reed of Corning. Ray and Dorothy had four children. Ray and his younger brother Ernie both joined the Merchant Marines in the early 60's and sailed around the world together.
Ray is proceeded in death by his younger brother Ernest T. Provence, his son Michael Provence and his daughter Jana Provence. Ray leaves behind two daughters Donna and Melanie; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Dad will be dearly missed by all of us. He had a great sense of humor and a lifelong love of learning.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Red Cross of Chico for victims of the Camp fire. Services will be announced at a later date.
