Obituary

Ron Spurgeon joined his wife and other family members in Heaven on 29 October 2024 after a lengthy illness with cancer. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. Ron was born in Oklahoma City, OK, to parents Charles and Margaret Spurgeon. While forever proud to be called an Okie, Ron mostly grew up and lived in Shasta County, CA before eventually settling in Red Bluff, CA.

Ron met Carol Barnett at a Shasta County dance in 1962 and they were married in 1964. During this same period of time, Ron enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a Boiler Technician/Fireman on the USS Bennington (CV-20.) Before being honorably discharged from the Navy, he earned the rank of Petty Officer Second Class (E-5.) During his time in the Navy, Ron became a Shellback. He also served within combat zones in Vietnam and was a member of the Seventh Fleet Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club. Upon returning home from the Navy, Ron and Carol settled down in Red Bluff, CA where they bought their first and only 'forever home' in 1972.

Ron earned a living working as a boiler operator and millwright for Diamond Lumber and later as a millwright foreman for Sierra Pacific Industries; Carol shared the duties and worked time and a half as wife/mom/cook/cleaner/gardener and upholsterer. Together, they were an unstoppable pair. Ron will probably best be remembered for his sense of humor, his work ethic, his willingness to help anybody, his love of family and friends, and being out and about in his brighter than bright yellow 1956 Ford F-100 pickup. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, going to the casino, spending time with family and friends, and life.

Ron was preceded in death by Carol in 2013. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Gary (Becky) Spurgeon, Ron (Cindee) Spurgeon, grandchildren Kendra Spurgeon (Ryan), Cody (Missy) Spurgeon, Kassie (Rich) Reiter, and Alyssa (Logan) Reynolds, and by great grandchildren Nykota and Raegan Spurgeon. Ron is also survived by his lady friend, Victoria Romero, three brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and lots and lots of good friends, some that go back more than 50 years. He will be missed forever.

There will be a memorial service for Ron on November 18, 2024, at 09:30 am the Veterans Cemetery at Igo, CA (11800 Gas Point Road, Igo CA) with a funeral reception to follow in Red Bluff.
